The scooter ban and steep-road safety on Son Tra, the spring scenery and best viewing times for douc langurs, and a half-day private car itinerary.
Table of Contents (4 sections)
Exploring Son Tra Peninsula in spring by private car with a driver is a convenient way to travel for families with young children or for older guests. The peninsula is known for winding, steep mountain roads, and a rule bans scooters from the high slopes to keep traffic safe. Choosing a 4-, 7- or 16-seat car with an experienced local driver lets you relax and enjoy the seasonal scenery of changing leaves and the view over Da Nang Bay from above.
The fare stays the same for up to 3 stops. A 4th stop adds US$6 for 4-seat cars and US$8 for 7 and 16-seat vehicles, because stopping for photos and sightseeing runs the trip longer than planned. From a 5th stop on, dispatch quotes separately.
Starting rates only. Sun Travel checks the pickup and drop-off points, itinerary and departure time before confirming the trip. Fuel, road tolls and parking are included in the listed route rate. Waiting at pickup is free for 30 minutes; waiting beyond 1 hour adds US$4. Extra stops need separate confirmation. Applicable starting rates for a half-day private car tour of Son Tra Peninsula and the Marble Mountains, by 4-, 7- and 16-seat size. The base price includes fuel, BOT road tolls and parking fees according to the published programme.
The scooter ban and the safety of Son Tra’s steep roads
Since 2019, the Da Nang People’s Committee and the Son Tra Peninsula Management Board have issued a rule banning all motorbikes and scooters from the dangerous steep roads inside the conservation area. Checkpoints at the junction towards Ban Co Peak and at the turn to Bai Bac monitor vehicles on the road:
- Why scooters are banned: The roads up to the radar station, Ban Co Peak and the thousand-year-old banyan tree have gradients of 10% to more than 15%, with many tight hairpin bends. Scooters cannot use effective engine braking at low gears on long descents, so riders must keep braking, which can overheat the brake pads or reduce grip and create a serious risk of skidding and falling.
- A private car with a driver as the alternative: Sun Travel’s cars are well maintained. The drivers are experienced local people who know the bends and are used to braking with low gears on descents.
Son Tra’s spring scenery and the best time to see the douc langurs
From February to May, the peninsula is at its most colourful:
- Changing forest and white flowers on the slopes: Spring weather in central Vietnam is mild, with temperatures between 22 and 26°C. The winter drizzle has passed and the summer heat has not yet arrived. The primary forest shifts from fresh leaves to yellow and red tones before thung muc flowers bloom white along the coastal hills.
- Watching the red-shanked douc langur: Son Tra is the natural home of a rare population of red-shanked douc langurs. The two best windows to see troops moving through the branches in search of fresh shoots are early morning, from 07:00 to 09:00, and late afternoon, from 15:30 to 17:00. Bring binoculars or a camera with a telephoto lens, keep a respectful distance from the wildlife, and avoid making noise or feeding the animals.
A half-day private car itinerary to explore the peninsula
A standard half-day tour of 4 to 5 hours runs in a clockwise loop, so you can visit the signature spots without rushing:
- 08:00 — Pick-up at your coastal or city-centre hotel: The car collects the group at the agreed time and drives gently along the coastal road of Hoang Sa, which follows the curve of the bay.
- 08:20 — Visit Linh Ung Pagoda at Bai But: A well-known, peaceful spiritual stop with a 67-metre statue of Quan The Am Bodhisattva facing the East Sea. Spend about 45 minutes in the grounds and enjoy the view over My Khe beach stretching towards the horizon. The guide to Linh Ung Pagoda at Bai But explains what to wear and when to visit in more detail.
- 09:20 — Reach Ban Co Peak and the radar station: The car takes you through green forest up to nearly 700 metres above sea level. At Ban Co Peak, walk along the rocky outcrop to see the statue of immortals playing chess, feel the cool mountain breeze and take in the whole city of Da Nang, with its bridges over the Han River in view.
- 10:30 — Visit the thousand-year-old banyan or Vong Canh House: Depending on traffic and local weather, the driver will take the group to the huge aerial roots of the heritage banyan tree, or stop at Vong Canh House to see Jade Islet (Hon Ngoc) glowing in the early sun.
- 11:30 — Return to the starting point: The car takes the group back to the hotel, or drops you at a seafood restaurant along Vo Nguyen Giap Street for lunch.
