Two Days, One Night from Da Nang to Hue by Private Car: Driving Stages and Stops
Da Nang to Hue is about 2.5 hours in the rate table, so the time budget of two days sits in the stops, not the road. The guide splits the plan into a Hai Van and Lang Co day and a Hue day, states that Bach Ma can now be continued only on foot from km 12, and lists what to send for a quote.
Table of Contents (7 sections)
Two days and one night let you visit Hue without driving back to Da Nang the same day: the first day covers the road and the stops at Hai Van and Lang Co, you sleep in Hue, and the second day belongs entirely to the city before the return. This guide splits the plan by the driving times in Sun Travel’s rate table, says which stop is currently conditional (Bach Ma) and lists what to settle before you send your schedule for a quote.
When one night is better than a day trip to Hue
The rate table lists Da Nang to Hue at about 100 km and 2.5 hours one way. On that figure, the Da Nang, Hai Van, Lang Co and Hue day tour (departing 8:00, back at 18:00) still suits you if you choose only two or three stops. Two days and one night are worth considering if you want to see the Imperial City and one more site without watching the clock, to stop at Lap An lagoon or Bach Ma on the way, to travel with older people or young children who need more rests, or to have dinner in Hue instead of sitting in the car on the way back.
In return, the trip adds one overnight for the driver and the leg back. Neither is part of the base rate table and both are quoted separately for your schedule; a multi-day programme does not yet have a listed all-inclusive price on the website.
Driving times by leg
| Leg | Reference in the rate table (one way) |
|---|---|
| Da Nang to Lang Co (through the Hai Van tunnel) | about 40 km, 1.5 hours |
| Da Nang to Bach Ma National Park | about 65 km, 1.5 hours |
| Hue to Lang Co / Lap An lagoon | about 65 km, 1 hour 15 minutes |
| Da Nang to Hue | about 100 km, 2.5 hours |
| Hue to Da Nang | about 100 km, 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes |
These are one-way entries in the table, used only to plan the time budget. Adding legs is a planning sum, not a commitment on time or price; real times change with your start time, the weather and the number of stops. Rates for each leg are on the pages for a private car from Da Nang to Hue and from Hue to Da Nang.
Day 1: Hai Van, Lang Co, then the night in Hue
Pass or tunnel. According to the Da Nang city portal, the Hai Van tunnel is 6.28 km long, opened on 5 June 2005 and replaced the old pass road of about 21 km. If you want a scenic stop at Hai Van Quan (built in 1826 under Emperor Minh Mang, at about 496 m according to public travel sources), say so at the start so dispatch can confirm a pass drive. Who decides between the pass and the tunnel in bad weather should also be written down when you book.
Lang Co and Lap An lagoon. Lap An lagoon covers about 800 ha at the foot of Phu Gia pass, near Highway 1A at Lang Co. It is a sensible short stop between the two legs; see the guide to the Lap An lagoon and Lang Co stopover.
Arriving in Hue. Without Bach Ma, a compact plan is to leave in the morning, stop at Hai Van and Lang Co, have lunch and reach Hue in the early afternoon. The Hue monuments sell tickets until 17:00 or 17:30 depending on the season (see day 2), so if you arrive after 16:00 there is almost no time left for the Imperial City; keep the place you most want to see for day 2.
Bach Ma: the current state of the road
According to the notice of 25 December 2025 from Bach Ma National Park, the park reopened on 1 January 2026 but the road to the summit is damaged by a landslide at km 12. Motor vehicles cannot pass this section, so visitors walk across the landslide for about 500 m and then about 7 km on foot up to Hai Vong Dai. The park asks visitors to arrive at the Visitor Centre before 9:00 to be grouped with a guide, and to be back before 17:00 the same day. The newspaper Tien Phong reported on 21 June 2026 that the road was still cut and repairs had not started.
What this means for the schedule: with that distance and those deadlines, Bach Ma is currently an almost full-day walking activity. If you choose it, it becomes the focus of day 1: leave Da Nang early enough to arrive by 9:00 (the table gives 1.5 hours) and travel on to Hue only after 17:00. If you do not want to walk, leave Bach Ma out instead of calling in briefly. Before you go, ask the park directly which points below km 12 are open and whether grouping is required, because the situation can change. General information about the park is in the Bach Ma National Park guide.
Day 2: Hue, then back to Da Nang
According to the page of the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre (posted 12 March 2024, checked on 1 October 2026), the sites sell tickets from 6:30 to 17:30 in summer (16 March to 15 October) and from 7:00 to 17:00 in winter (16 October to 15 March of the following year), and close 60 minutes after ticket sales end. The season of your travel date decides which hours apply; check again before you go. The complex was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site on 11 December 1993; tickets are sold by the centre and are not part of the car rate. A guide to the Imperial City is in the Hue Imperial City visitor guide.
Plan the time on day 2 backwards from the hour you must be back in Da Nang: subtract about 2 to 2.25 hours of driving (the Hue to Da Nang entry) and then add a margin for rests. Illustration only, not a fixed schedule: if you need to be in Da Nang at 19:00, leave Hue no later than about 16:30 if you do not stop. If you fly from Da Nang on day 2, count back from the airline’s check-in time and use the Hue to Da Nang airport entry, which has the same reference of about 100 km.
If you start from Hoi An
The rate table lists Hoi An to Hue at about 130 km and 2.5 hours, and the return from Hue to Hoi An at about 130 km and 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours. The return is about 45 minutes slower than Hue to Da Nang, so day 2 needs to leave Hue earlier by the same amount. Rates for each leg are on the pages for a private car from Hoi An to Hue and from Hue to Hoi An.
What to send so the schedule can be settled
- Your pickup in Da Nang or Hoi An (the car can drive through the gates of hotels and resorts to pick up and drop off), where you stay in Hue, and your dates in and out.
- The number of passengers, the number of suitcases and a 4, 7 or 16-seat vehicle.
- Whether you want the pass, the tunnel or a suggestion from dispatch; whether Bach Ma is in the plan and whether everyone is ready to walk.
- The time you must be back in Da Nang, or your flight time if there is one.
The base rate table has no entry for the driver’s overnight stay; how it is arranged and counted is written in the quote or confirmation before departure. A trip needs a 20% deposit of the trip price; cancellation is free if you tell us at least 2 hours before the pickup time, and if later the terms are written in the confirmation. The service scope is on the page for multi-day car rental with a driver; general advice for planning several days is in the multi-day private car rental guide.
Frequently asked questions about two days and one night from Da Nang to Hue by private car
Does two days and one night cost more than a day trip to Hue?
It can, because the trip adds one overnight for the driver and the return leg. The base rate table is a one-way rate for each route and includes fuel, tolls and parking or gate fees; the two items above are not inferred from it, so they are quoted separately for the schedule you send.
Can we go to Bach Ma by car at the moment?
The park reopened on 1 January 2026, but the road to the summit is damaged by a landslide at km 12, so motor vehicles cannot pass and visitors walk the rest, according to the park's notice of 25 December 2025; Tien Phong reported on 21 June 2026 that the road was still cut. Ask the park about the road and the points that are receiving visitors before you travel.
If the weather turns bad, can the order of stops change or a stop be dropped?
You can ask for it. A change alters the timing and how the trip is counted, so agree it with dispatch and have it written in the confirmation. Storms in central Vietnam usually peak around October and November, so a trip in those months needs a fallback plan.
Until what time is the Imperial City in Hue open?
According to the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre, tickets are sold until 17:30 in summer (16 March to 15 October) and until 17:00 in winter (16 October to 15 March), and the sites close 60 minutes after that. The page was posted on 12 March 2024, so check again before you go.
Can the car pick us up and drop us at our hotel in Hue?
The car can drive through the gates of hotels and resorts to pick up and drop off. Send the name and address of your hotel in Hue so dispatch can confirm the pickup for day 2.
