The car route from Da Nang to Thanh Ha Pottery Village is about 30 to 32 km. It makes a useful stop between Da Nang and your Hoi An hotel, where you can see the kilns and make your own pot. Knowing which road to take, where the car can park and how to keep luggage safe in the car makes the stop relaxed and keeps your check-in on schedule.
Two road options from Da Nang to Thanh Ha
The driver chooses one of two routes, depending on where you start in Da Nang (a hotel on My Khe beach or a hotel in the city centre near the airport):
- Coastal road (32 km, about 45 minutes): from My Khe beach or the Son Tra peninsula, the car runs along Vo Nguyen Giap, then continues on Truong Sa and Lac Long Quan. On the Hoi An boundary it turns onto Hai Ba Trung or Dien Bien Phu, then follows Hung Vuong to reach Thanh Ha from the north-west. This is a coastal road with four to six lanes, open and lined with resorts.
- Inland road via Provincial Road 607 (28 to 30 km, about 40 minutes): from the airport or Hai Chau district, the car runs along Nguyen Tri Phuong across the Cam Le bridge or Le Van Hien, joins Tran Dai Nghia and Provincial Road 607 (Nguyen Tat Thanh, Hoi An). At the roundabout at Nguyen Tat Thanh and Hung Vuong, the car turns right onto Hung Vuong for about 2 km to Duy Tan street beside the Thu Bon river. This route is shorter and avoids the strong sea wind in the rainy season.
Village lanes and where the car can park
Thanh Ha is a riverside village with a network of old lanes, so knowing where the car can stop makes getting in and out quick:
- Access roads inside the village: Duy Tan and Pham Phan streets are 6 to 8 m wide, so 4-, 7- and 16-seat vehicles can pass in both directions. The side lanes that lead to individual kilns, such as Mieu Nam Dieu and Lo Bau lanes, are paved with old bricks or narrow concrete, only 1.5 to 2.5 m wide, and motor vehicles are not allowed in them to protect the heritage area.
- Village car park: the main visitor car park is at the junction of Duy Tan and Pham Phan streets, next to the heritage ticket counter. It has a solid concrete base, shade from old trees and room for several tourist cars at once. From the car park it is about 50 m on foot to the kiln workshops.
- Terracotta Park car park: if your group plans to visit the art park first, the car can drive about 300 m further along Pham Phan, beside the river, to the park’s own car park. This car park has a side gate that leads straight to the ceramics museum hall, which is convenient for older guests and families with pushchairs.
Looking after luggage and pottery on the car ride
A visit to the village often means carrying several large suitcases and personal items:
- Keeping belongings safe in the car: all luggage, travel bags and valuable electronics go into the locked boot. While you spend one to two hours in the village, the driver stays with the vehicle and watches over the belongings, so you can explore the lanes without carrying heavy bags.
- Protecting pottery and souvenirs: raw, unfired pieces and clay gifts are very fragile and crack easily. After your wheel-throwing session, place the piece in a cardboard box lined with foam or newspaper. When you get back in the car, the driver helps you put the box on a flat spot on the front seat or the floor, away from heavy suitcases.
Timing the stop before your Hoi An check-in
To make the afternoon run smoothly, match your departure time to the check-in time of your hotel:
- A good afternoon pickup: most Hoi An hotels and resorts start check-in at 14:00. A common plan is a pickup in Da Nang at 13:00 or 13:30. After a 45-minute drive, you reach Thanh Ha at about 14:15.
- Time at the village: allow about 1 to 1.5 hours to visit the family kilns, throw a clay cup at the wheel and walk around the Terracotta Park. Board the car at about 15:45. From there it is about 10 minutes along Hung Vuong into the old town, which gets you to the hotel at about 16:00 to settle in before the evening lantern walk.
- Adding another stop: if you start early in the morning, the car can stop at the Marble Mountains on the coastal road before turning into the village. Keep to no more than two stops, so the older members of the group are not worn out.
