Hue, Quang Tri and Phong Nha in 3 Days and 2 Nights from Da Nang: Splitting a Long Route

Day 2, from Hue through the Quang Tri heritage sites down to Phong Nha, is the longest day of this three-day plan. The guide counts back from each stop's closing time, flags what the rate table lacks and offers two endings: at Phong Nha or straight back to Da Nang.

Three days and two nights are enough to link Hue, the Quang Tri heritage sites and Phong Nha, provided you accept that day 2 is the longest. This guide splits each day by the driving times in the rate table, counts backwards from the closing times of the stops and gives two ways to end: at Phong Nha or by driving straight back to Da Nang. Where the rate table has no reference, the guide says that dispatch must confirm it instead of guessing.

Driving times in the rate table

Leg Reference in the rate table
Da Nang to Hue about 100 km, 2.5 hours (one way)
Hue to the Quang Tri historical route about 80 km, 1 hour 30 minutes each way (one-day programme)
Da Nang or Hoi An to the Vinh Moc Tunnels about 200 km, 3.8 hours (one way)
Hue to Phong Nha about 215 km, 4 hours to 4 hours 15 minutes (one way)
Da Nang or Hoi An to Phong Nha Cave about 310 km, 5.5 hours (one way)

The table has no entry for Vinh Moc to Phong Nha and none for Phong Nha to Da Nang (the return direction). The only certain statement is a lower bound: the direct Hue to Phong Nha leg already takes about 4 hours or more, so every stop in Quang Tri can only make day 2 longer. Rates for each leg are on the pages for a private car from Hue to Phong Nha and the Hue to Quang Tri heritage sites car tour.

Day 1: Da Nang to Hue

With 2.5 hours in the car, day 1 leaves plenty of time for Hai Van, Lang Co and an afternoon in Hue. How to split it, the seasonal opening hours of the Hue monuments and the present state of Bach Ma are covered in the two-day, one-night Da Nang to Hue itinerary; here one point is enough: day 1 should end in Hue early enough for you to sleep well before day 2.

Day 2: Hue, Quang Tri, then Phong Nha

The Quang Tri sites are memorials, so their closing times are hard limits to count back from:

  • Quang Tri Citadel stands on the bank of the Thach Han river and is tied to the 81 days and nights of the summer of 1972. Its opening hours had no official source that could be checked on 1 October 2026, so ask the management before you go.
  • The Hien Luong and Ben Hai riverbanks lie on Highway 1A, where the Hien Luong bridge was the dividing line at the 17th parallel from 1954 to 1975. The Quang Tri tourism page gives opening hours of 7:00 to 18:00; the ticket price is listed as being updated.
  • The Vinh Moc Tunnels are a special national monument (Decision 2408/QD-TTg of 31 December 2014), where villagers lived underground for nearly 2,000 days and nights. The Quang Tri tourism page gives opening hours of 7:00 to 18:00; the ticket price is listed as being updated.

To be sure of entering Vinh Moc before 18:00 and still reaching Phong Nha the same day, count backwards: the arrival time at Vinh Moc plus the time you stay must be earlier than 18:00, and after that the leg down to Phong Nha still remains, for which the table has no reference. With a planning assumption of 1 to 1.5 hours at each stop (not a recommended visiting time for any site), three stops plus the Hue to Phong Nha leg of about 4 hours, lunch and the detour up to the 17th parallel, day 2 comes to roughly 10 to 12 hours from the moment you leave your hotel. If that feels heavy, dropping the citadel or splitting the plan over four days are more realistic options than shortening the time at each stop.

These are places of remembrance: dress modestly and leave time for offerings or paying respects at each stop. More information is in the guides to a Quang Tri historical tour by private car and a private car to the Vinh Moc Tunnels.

Day 3: Phong Nha, then end there or return to Da Nang

Phong Nha - Ke Bang is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site (inscribed in 2003). According to the Phong Nha tourism page (phongnhatourism.com.vn, checked on 1 October 2026), a visit to Phong Nha Cave begins with about 30 minutes on a motor boat along the Son river, then a change to a hand-paddled boat for about 1,200 m inside the cave and a walk through two dry caves; the whole trip takes about 2.5 hours. Operating hours change with the season: 7:15 to 16:30 in summer and 7:30 to 15:45 in winter. Cave tickets and boat hire are collected separately by the operator and are not part of the car rate. Because the boats stop early, entering the cave on the morning of day 3 is safer than trying to arrive in time on the afternoon of day 2.

There are two ways to end:

  • End at Phong Nha: suitable if you go on by another means. The rate table has an entry for Hue to Phong Nha; a final drop-off other than your accommodation is confirmed separately.
  • Return to Da Nang: use Da Nang to Phong Nha at about 310 km and 5.5 hours, read in the opposite direction, as a base. Illustration only, not a fixed schedule: if you finish the cave around 12:00, have lunch and leave at 13:00, you reach Da Nang around 19:00 without many stops. This return leg is not in the rate table and is quoted separately.

Storms and a fallback plan

According to newspapers quoting weather forecasts, the storm and rainy season in central Vietnam usually runs from about September to December and peaks in October and November. At the end of October 2025, rainfall at the top of Bach Ma reached 1,739 mm in 24 hours (VnExpress, 29 October 2025); after that downpour the road to the summit was cut by a landslide at km 12 and by June 2026 it had still not been repaired. The example shows that heavy rain can disrupt roads and sites for many months. If your dates fall in these months, keep one stop per day that can be dropped and check each site’s notices before you travel.

What to send so the schedule can be settled

  • Your pickup in Da Nang or Hoi An (the car can drive through the gates of hotels and resorts to pick up and drop off), where you stay in Hue and in Phong Nha, your start date and where the trip ends.
  • The Quang Tri stops you definitely want and the ones that can be dropped if you run late.
  • The number of passengers, the number of suitcases and a 4, 7 or 16-seat vehicle.

The base rate table has no entry for the driver’s overnight stay, the return leg or a waiting car; these are quoted separately. A trip needs a 20% deposit of the trip price; cancellation is free if you tell us at least 2 hours before the pickup time, and if later the terms are written in the confirmation. The service scope is on the page for multi-day car rental with a driver; information specific to Phong Nha is in the guide to a private car journey to Phong Nha National Park.

Frequently asked questions about three days and two nights through Hue, Quang Tri and Phong Nha

Which province does Phong Nha belong to now and how should the address be written?

Since 1 July 2025, under Resolution 202/2025/QH15, Quang Binh has merged into Quang Tri province, so Phong Nha now belongs to Quang Tri province. The rate table and many travel sites still use the old name Quang Binh; write the address as it appears on your accommodation confirmation so the driver and dispatch mean the same place.

Can we visit the citadel, Hien Luong and Vinh Moc in one day and then continue to Phong Nha?

In terms of hours it can be done if you leave Hue very early and stay only a short time at each stop, but day 2 then runs roughly 10 to 12 hours on the guide's planning assumption. Dropping one stop or splitting the plan over four days is gentler when older people or young children are travelling.

How long does Phong Nha Cave take and when should we go?

The whole trip takes about 2.5 hours, including about 30 minutes on a motor boat along the Son river. Operating hours are 7:15 to 16:30 in summer and 7:30 to 15:45 in winter according to the Phong Nha tourism page, so the morning of day 3 is the lowest-risk time.

Does the car rate include boat tickets and entry to the sites?

No. The car rate includes fuel, tolls and parking or gate fees on the listed route. Entry to Hien Luong, Vinh Moc and Phong Nha Cave and the boat hire are collected separately by each operator.

How is the cost counted if the trip ends at Phong Nha?

There is no return leg to count, because the car finishes the trip at the drop-off point. The driver's two overnights and any extra stop are not in the base rate table and are quoted separately for your schedule; a multi-day programme does not yet have a listed all-inclusive price.
