Where to Catch Your Private Car in Hoi An at Night

Hoi An old town at night is full of lanterns, floating candles on the Hoai River and busy night markets. After an evening walk, many visitors, especially families with young children or older relatives, find it hard to locate a pickup point because the core of the old town is a pedestrian zone closed to motor vehicles during certain hours.

Knowing the traffic rules and choosing a fixed pickup point outside the restricted zone helps you and your driver meet quickly, without a long walk in the dark.

Pedestrian Rules and Restricted Hours

Hoi An operates a pedestrian and non-motorised zone on central streets, including Tran Phu, Nguyen Thai Hoc, Bach Dang, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Le Loi, Hoang Van Thu, Chau Thuong Van and the south bank of the Hoai River. Restricted hours are commonly given as:

• Morning: About 09:00 to 11:00.
• Afternoon and evening: About 15:00 to 21:30, sometimes later in the peak season.

During these hours, motor vehicles including cars, motorbikes and electric shuttles are not allowed into the heritage area. Cars can therefore only meet you at car parks and junctions on the outer ring. Hours and rules can change, so check current notices.

Four Commonly Used Meeting Areas Around the Old Town

Choose the one closest to where you finish your evening. Confirm the exact point with the driver before you leave.

1. The Hoai River Square car park area (south bank)

• Suits: The An Hoi night market, Nguyen Phuc Chu Street and An Hoi Bridge.
• Notes: A large parking area around the south bank of the river, with room to turn for 4, 7 and 16-seat vehicles. From the night market it is a short walk along the riverside.

2. The Phan Chu Trinh and Hai Ba Trung junction (near the Japanese Covered Bridge)

• Suits: The Japanese Covered Bridge, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street and the west end of Tran Phu.
• Notes: Convenient if you have just visited the bridge or eaten on Phan Chu Trinh. It is a walk of a few minutes from the pedestrian area.

3. The Hoi An Market area (corner of Hoang Dieu and Tran Phu)

• Suits: The east side of the old town, the market, and the Fujian and Chaozhou assembly halls.
• Notes: At the end of Tran Phu where it meets Hoang Dieu, there is parking and wider kerbside space for a car to stop for passengers.

4. The Ly Thuong Kiet and Do Dang Tuyen parking area

• Suits: Guests staying on or walking in the northern part of the old town, along Thai Phien and Tran Hung Dao.
• Notes: An open parking area that can suit larger groups in a 16-seater after dinner at a traditional restaurant.

Tips for Meeting Your Driver at Night

• Send a landmark name with your location: GPS can drift by a few dozen metres in narrow old-town lanes. Alongside a map pin, message the driver a clear landmark, for example “standing in front of the car park at the Hoai River Square”.
• Call 15 to 20 minutes ahead: When the night market closes, roughly 20:30 to 21:30, traffic around the ring is heavy. Contact the driver before you walk to the meeting point so the car has time to arrive.
• Book a return trip in advance: If you stay at a beach resort at Cua Dai or An Bang, or in Da Nang, book a private car from Da Nang to Hoi An in both directions or check the private car rates so you are not scrambling for a taxi late at night.
