What Time Should You Leave Hue to Make a Flight or Check-In in Da Nang or Hoi An?
From Hue to Da Nang or the airport the rate table lists about 100 km and 2 to 2 hours 15 minutes; to Hoi An about 130 km and 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours. Count back from the airport or check-in time, then add stops and a buffer. The guide gives the formula, three situations and what to send.
Table of Contents (6 sections)
From Hue to Da Nang or Da Nang Airport the rate table lists about 100 km and 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes; to Hoi An it lists about 130 km and 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours. Work out your departure by counting back from the time you must be at the airport or the hotel, then add stops and a buffer, rather than starting from checkout. This guide gives the formula, three common situations and what to send so the pickup time in Hue can be settled.
Driving times from Hue in the rate table
| Route (one way) | Distance and time in the rate table |
|---|---|
| Hue to Da Nang | about 100 km, 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes |
| Hue to Da Nang Airport | about 100 km, 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes |
| Hue to Hoi An | about 130 km, 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours |
| Hue to Lang Co / Lap An lagoon | about 65 km, 1 hour 15 minutes |
These are one-way entries used to plan the time budget; they exclude stops, rush hour and weather. Rates for each route are on the pages for a private car from Hue to Da Nang, from Hue to Da Nang Airport, from Hue to Hoi An and from Hue to Lang Co and Lap An lagoon. Hoi An is exactly 45 minutes slower than Da Nang at both ends of the range, so most Hoi An plans only need an earlier departure by that amount.
The formula for your departure time
Departure from Hue = time you must arrive − driving time − agreed stops − buffer.
- Time you must arrive: for a flight, the airport arrival time set by your airline and printed on your ticket; for a hotel, the check-in time the hotel allows. Do not use the take-off time as the starting point.
- Driving time: use the long end of the range (2 hours 15 minutes or 3 hours) rather than the short end. The short end only holds with free-flowing roads and no stops.
- Stops: each stop adds the time you want to stay plus the time the car needs to pull in and out. Count small ones too, such as a coffee or a toilet break.
- Buffer: keep some for luggage, checking out in Hue, a pickup point down a narrow lane and traffic on Highway 1.
Three common situations
To Da Nang Airport for a flight. Take the airline arrival time, subtract 2 hours 15 minutes of driving and your buffer. An illustration, not a fixed schedule: if the airline asks you to be at the airport at 14:00 and you keep a 45-minute buffer, the car should leave Hue at about 11:00. A morning flight leaves almost no room for a stop; with an afternoon flight the morning in Hue has spare time. The car takes you to the departures hall on level 2 of Terminal 1 (domestic) or Terminal 2 (international), so send the flight number to avoid the wrong terminal. If you are also planning the Hoi An leg to the airport, see timing a pickup for an early flight. And if your flight leaves from Phu Bai airport in Hue instead of Da Nang, see a private car to Phu Bai airport from Da Nang and Hoi An.
To a hotel in Da Nang or Hoi An. The hotel sets check-in, not the car. Arriving before check-in usually means leaving your bags only, so ask the hotel before you book a very early departure from Hue. For Hoi An, plan on the 3-hour end of the table.
Stopping on the way. Hue to Lang Co / Lap An is 1 hour 15 minutes, about half of Hue to Da Nang, so the lagoon is a natural place to break the drive. It covers about 800 ha at the foot of Phu Gia pass near Highway 1A; see the guide to the Lap An lagoon and Lang Co stopover. A stop pushes your arrival back, so add it to the formula instead of trimming the buffer.
Tunnel or pass on the way back
According to the Da Nang city portal, the Hai Van tunnel is 6.28 km long, opened on 5 June 2005 and replaced the old pass road of about 21 km. The rate table does not say which road its 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes for Hue to Da Nang refers to, so ask dispatch when you book. Driving the pass (about 500 m high, with Hai Van Quan built in 1826 according to public travel sources) usually lengthens the trip because of stops, and depends on weather more than the tunnel does. With a fixed flight or check-in, default to the more reliable option and add the pass only if time remains. Whether you take the pass or the tunnel, and who decides in bad weather, should be confirmed when you book.
If you still want one stop in Hue before leaving
According to the page of the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre (posted 12 March 2024, checked on 1 October 2026), the sites sell tickets from 6:30 in summer (16 March to 15 October) and from 7:00 in winter (16 October to 15 March the following year). Whichever season your date falls in, that season’s hours apply; the page dates from 2024, so check again before you travel. A morning flight leaves almost no room for a visit; with an evening flight, one site that opens early can still work if the formula above leaves time. For the Imperial City, see the Hue Imperial City visitor guide.
What to send so the pickup time can be settled
- The name and address of your accommodation in Hue; cars can enter the gates of hotels and resorts to pick up and drop off.
- Your destination: the airport (with terminal and flight number) or the hotel address in Da Nang or Hoi An.
- Your flight time or check-in time, and the time you want to leave Hue if you already have one.
- The number of passengers, the number of suitcases and the 4-, 7- or 16-seat vehicle.
- Whether you prefer the tunnel or the pass, and any stop you want.
The rate table gives one-way rates for each route; stops and waiting time are not included automatically, so they are stated in the quote. See the price list to compare routes.
Common questions about timing a car from Hue to Da Nang, Hoi An and the airport
How long is the drive from Hue to Da Nang Airport?
The rate table lists about 100 km and 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes one way. That excludes stops, rush hour and weather, so when you plan around a flight use the 2 hours 15 minutes end and add a buffer.
How long before my flight should I leave Hue?
There is no single figure. Start from the airport arrival time set by your airline and printed on your ticket, subtract the driving time (up to 2 hours 15 minutes in the rate table) and a buffer for luggage, checkout and traffic. Send the flight number when you book so dispatch can work it out with you.
Do we take the Hai Van tunnel or the pass on the way back, and can it be changed?
You can ask for the pass instead of the tunnel, but the pass usually makes the trip longer and depends on the weather, so with a fixed flight or check-in choose the reliable option. How you go and who decides in bad weather should be confirmed when you book.
How much longer is Hoi An than Da Nang?
According to the rate table, Hue to Hoi An is about 130 km and 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours, against 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes to Da Nang, which is 45 minutes slower at both ends of the range.
What if I change the pickup time or cancel?
A change of pickup time needs to be confirmed again for the trip. Cancellation is free if Sun Travel receives notice at least 2 hours before pickup; for later notice the terms are set out in the quote or trip confirmation.
